My initial reaction after having read Torin Ellis' RIP the Resume was 'I wish I would have had this book 20 years ago." This book may very well be the single most invaluable resource to today's job seekers. While reading this book, it is apparent that the author's passion and purpose are to help others realize how to tell the story of themselves to recruiters and prospective employers. Ellis stresses the idea that the interview is a conversation, and he models this in how he writes and presents his knowledge and understanding of the job search process. He has a conversation with his readers in which he empowers them, inspires them, and empathizes with them without sugarcoating the realities of the hard work that a potential candidate must be willing to put in, in order to be the hero who gets the job.The book is structured in purposeful steps that include being clear about the posted job description, creating an outstanding resume, making yourself stand out in a pool full of applicants, the interview itself and spot on advice about how to follow up after an interview. The author's genuine concern for the reader and his clients is refreshing as it is reassuring that the human experience is still of importance in the marketplace.Throughout the book, the author offers his contact information and additional resources to help guide the candidate through all aspects of the job search process. I never felt like Torin Ellis wrote this book to make a profit. I felt he wrote it because he is invested in making people realize their full potential and helping them understand the steps of how to get there. It struck me often as I read all 96 pages, that he was not just offering wisdom about how to get a job, but first hand experience about how to live a fulfilling life.If you are graduating or about to graduate from college, get this book! If you are looking to switch careers, get this book! If you want to move up in your field, get this book! If you have always been scared of taking a risk in pursuing your ideal job, GET THIS BOOK! I promise you, you will find it has been your mediocrity in the job search process that has been holding you back!

I purchased this book thinking that I just wanted to support a fellow entrepreneur and hoping that I would get a little something out of it. I got a bit more than something, I got a whole lot. Particularly, I got a completely new way of thinking about myself and my accomplishments in the workforce thus far in my life. I went through the book with my resume in hand and just about everything wrong to do on a resume, I had done. It's not that my resume was horrible, it was that it didn't stand out at all nor did it give an accurate representation of my skillset in terms of what I have to offer a company. Don't just read the book, pull out your resume and actively take part in the exercises throughout to learn more about marketing/presenting yourself and to drastically increase your chances in the job market. If you follow and apply the guidelines in this book your chances of success in your job search or at your current job will increase.

I just graduated with my MBA but after being on my job for 15 years and searching for advanced opportunities I didn't know where to start. Enter the Karen Hunter show on Sirius XM URBANVIEW and I hear Torin Ellis talk weekly about how to stand out in interviews and how to job search and find openings that personally fit what you want your individual brand to represent. This is a great book for those trying to accomplish an exclusive brand and succeed in their respective fields. His tips on branding, job search, and interviewing have helped me tremendously.

Hi Torin. I purchased two copies of your book when it first published keeping one for myself and gifting the other. I am a federal government employee and even with experience promotions are hard to come by. The further you are on the GS scale, the more cut throat it becomes. I updated my resume based on your book's recommendations. Much of the content in my resume remained the same but the presentation of it and ensuring the outcomes related to my work were clearly explained has made all the difference. As an example, I recently applied for a GS-15 position. The position was posted for 5 days. Within those five days, they received 150 resumes. Seventy-seven of those applicants were deemed 'highy qualified' Of those, 10 were referred to the hiring manager. Those 10 were cut to five people who were interviewed. I am in the top 3% of all the resumes they received. The office plans to make an announcement in a few weeks. I want to thank you NOW for getting me in the room to INTERVIEW THEM! What I learned from your book is the icing on my Chocolate cake. When I get the job, I will send you an update. #Baltimore #KarenRebels #RipTheResume #BlackGrilMagic

I learned about this book and the author after listening to the Karen Hunter show in XM. It is obvious that he is and expert in the field. As a mature job seeker, there was a lot of things about the present job market which I had become out of touch. This book helped me see the error of my ways, update my resume, and hit the ground running with a better perspective on how to get the job of my dreams.

This book was the missing tool in my arsenal. I heard about this book on the Karen Hunter show and decided that I liked what I was hearing from Mr. Ellis. I have a terrible habit of buying books and never reading them. Not this one! The timing was perfect because i had an interview. I wasn't feeling all that confident heading into this interview but I read these questions to ask and knew I could confidently articulate why and how I was the best candidate for this job. I used the close suggested in the book and have never felt better. I walked out of there knowing I was the candidate. i even sent Mr. Ellis a message a couple months ago, teasing about my pending success story. I am happy to say that I did receive the job offer, after a bit of a wait. Yes, I have accepted this offer but I am planning to go back to the book and update my resume because I want to be ready for the next knock from opportunity. Thank you for such an insightful book.
