Among the sacred books of India are the hymns of the Rig-Veda, the world’s first recorded poems; the “magical texts” of the Athara-Veda; the stirring pantheistic speculations of the Upanishads; and the Bhagavad-Gītā, a cosmic drama of divine self-revelation in human history on the field of human battle. Taken together they represent 3,500 years of a continuous religious tradition that is multifarious, inclusive, and, at the same time, wedded to a central spiritual vision. This edition features the translations and annotations of R. C. Zaehner, a pioneering scholar whose selections in this volume, first published by Everyman’s Library in 1966, have never been bettered as an introduction for the general reader to the Vedic tradition. Zaehner has chosen the most interesting and important verses, rendered in English that is accessible and vivid, and his introduction provides an excellent guide to the historical context, the philosophical significance, and the literary power of these beautiful and ancient texts.Introduction by R.C. Used Hindu Scriptures in good condition received. Haven't had a chance to review or understand contents
I have used this book in my introduction to Hinduism class for eight years now. I haven't found any other source book that stands up to it. Too many other anthologies give us the "Reader's Digest" version of the scriptures and the choice of what to take out and what to leave in tends to reflect the philosophical predilections of the editor. There is a bit of that here (esp. in the Veda section -- which tends to present us with passages that will be developed in later Vedanta), but he gives us an almost complete version of the Brhadaranyaka and Chandogya upanisads (i.e., not just the famous passages). His inclusion of the Yajnavalkya smriti as well as a (albeit small) sampling of late medieval tantra and bhakti literature makes for a good base of scripture to build any Hindusim course on. Of course, this book should be complimented by other works discussing what Hindus actually do with these texts (e.g. Pintchman's "Guests at God's Wedding" or Fuller, "Renewal of the Priesthood"). But this is a great place to start!
Wonderful translation and interpretation. For a non hindu, its a nice way to start the study.
Hindu Scriptures is good for beginners. Another useful link is [...] go to Dharmic Scriptures. This has been compiled by His. Holiness. Dr Jayant Athavale, a popular Saint in India.Of course fanatical Christians will find it useless.
I was looking for a 'bible' of the Hindu religion. My rating of this book is possibly a little sever but my conclusion from the book was that there is NO Bible for the Hindu religion, rather the religion is a number of short stories with no coherent structure other than this animals belly is the floor of the ocean, the left ear is the shore the right ear is the other shore of a big ocean, the back is the land,,, Sounds like a pagan, spirit oriented set of items for each type of animal...
